Checking your car's oil may sound like a difficult task, but the truth is that it's easy to do. In fact, there's no reason why you can't do it yourself. Use these tips to check your vehicle's oil.

How to Check Your Motor Oil

Checking your motor oil is a job that must get done. Many vehicle owners ignore this task because they don't know how to do it and because it sounds like a difficult thing to get done. In reality, checking your motor oil is quite easy and doesn't require much at all. To check your car's oil today, use these simple tips.

Why Do You Need to Check Your Oil?

Checking on your oil is an essential part of your vehicle maintenance. You likely have an oil change routine that you follow strictly, but in between changes, checking on your oil is a must. Taking care of this simple task will alert you of any issues with your oil that can lead to engine trouble over time. By taking a few minutes to check on your oil you will know if you have enough oil to keep your engine safe and you can be sure your oil is still in good enough condition to keep your car running smoothly.

How Often Should You Check Your Oil?

Checking your oil should be done periodically. It is recommended that you do this once a month, but doing it more often is even better. Checking on your oil every two weeks will help you stay on top of any changes before they lead to trouble.

What Do You Need to Check Your Oil?

You don't need a whole lot to check on your car's oil. You'll simply need your car with the hood open, a clean washcloth, and some extra oil, just in case. It's also helpful if you know where your oil dipstick is located under the hood, but if you don't you can find this in your owner's manual. How Do You Check Your Oil?

Before you panic and give up before even attempting this, rest assured knowing that checking your oil is super simple. To start, make sure your car is parked on a level surface. If it's parked at an incline, this can affect your oil reading and give you inaccurate results. After this, open up the hood of your car and locate the oil dipstick. Pull out the dipstick and clean it with your washcloth. Put the dipstick all the way back in its place and pull it out again. This time, take a look at your dipstick since this will tell you how much oil is left in your car. Your dipstick should have two indictor marks at the end of it. If your oil falls below the lowest line, then you're running low on oil and need to top it off. If your oil level falls somewhere in between the two markers, then your oil level is just fine. Before you start pouring oil into the reservoir where the dipstick located, stop! If you're running low, your engine should have a cap that screws off that is labeled oil cap or something similar to this. Add the same type of oil already in your vehicle into this reservoir for the best results. After verifying that you have plenty of oil left in your car, you'll then want to check on the condition of your oil. Go ahead and pull out the dipstick once more, but this time use your index finger and thumb to rub some of the oil together. The color, consistency, and the smell of your oil can help you figure out if it needs to be changed soon. If your oil is slick, a light shade, and still somewhat translucent, then your oil is fine for now. On the other hand, if your oil is thick, opaque, gritty, and smells burned, you're definitely ready for an oil change.
