Tips for Preparing Your Motorcycle for Winter Storage

During the winter, it can be uncomfortable and unsafe to continue riding your motorcycle. You'll be better off storing your ride for the season so that it's ready to go once spring arrives. The tips below can help you prep your motorcycle for the winter.

Keep the Battery Safely Charged

When you store your motorcycle for a whole season, the battery can suffer. Without it being called to use, it can quickly lose its charge, leaving you with a dead battery come spring. To prevent this from happening, disconnect your battery and connect it to a trickle charger. If you have a power source near where your battery will be stored, you can also connect it to a smart charger. Both of these options will keep your battery safely charged without damaging it through the winter. Once spring arrives, you can be sure your battery will be ready to go.

Fill up on Fuel

To keep your fuel tank protected, it's important that you fill it up before storing your motorcycle. Instead of storing it with a low level of fuel and letting this fuel go bad, fill it up to the top. After filling up your tank, add some fuel stabilizer to it that will keep your gas fresh and ready to use in the spring. Turn on your bike for a few minutes after adding in the fuel stabilizer to ensure the treated fuel makes its way into the fuel system. Filling up your tank will also help keep moisture out of it. The less space there is for moisture to develop, the less likely it'll be for rust to develop in your tank.

Change the Oil

If your motorcycle has old oil running through the engine, it's important that you take the time to change it before storing it. Old oil can break down faster and will have a harder time protecting your engine during the cold winter months. It's best to give it a synthetic oil change and replace the filter so that you know your engine will stay in good shape. Once spring arrives, you'll be much happier knowing you won't have to give your motorcycle an oil change before taking it out for a spin.

Keep the Tires Healthy

Your motorcycle's tires are something you may not think about too much when you're storing your motorcycle. If that's the case, you may be frustrated in the spring when you realize your motorcycle has been sitting on the same patches of your tires all winter long. These can develop flat spots after bearing the weight of your motorcycle for a whole season. Using a motorcycle stand can keep your tires off the ground, helping them stay in shape through the winter.

Plug the Entrances

It's not uncommon for rodents to make their way into motorcycles to take refuge from the cold. Not only is this gross, but these rodents are also known to chew through cables and other important components. To keep them out of your motorcycle, simply plug the entrances to your motorcycle. An exhaust plug is great for keeping rodents out. Don't forget to also plug the air intake so you have all the entrances covered.

Wash and Store Your Motorcycle

Finally, take the time to wash and dry your motorcycle. Doing so will get rid of any grime and debris left on your ride after the fall. This will help reduce corrosion on your bike's surface. After washing it, dry it thoroughly to get rid of moisture. Give it a new layer of wax to protect it while it's stored. Be sure to use a cover to keep your motorcycle protected from moisture and debris during the winter.
