Unfortunately for most motorcycle riders, the arrival of winter also means the end of motorcycle riding for the year. To help you put your motorcycle in storage this winter, use these tips.

Tips to Help You Store Your Motorcycle This Winter

As winter quickly approaches, the time to put your motorcycle in storage gets closer. Although most motorcyclists aren't particularly fond of putting their bike away for a whole season, it may be the safest option. To ensure your motorcycle is properly prepared to be put away, use these simple storage prep tips.

Find a Proper Storage Space

To start, you want to be sure you have the proper space to store your motorcycle in. A dark space with minimal moisture will be your best option. Some dealers offer storage spaces that provide the perfect storage conditions down to the perfect temperature. They can keep an eye on your motorcycle all winter and have it ready to go in the spring. If you'd rather store your motorcycle at home, your garage is a great place to do so. Just remember, if your garage has a window, store your motorcycle away from it. This is important for two reasons. First off, the sunlight can cause parts of your motorcycle to fade and contribute to other aesthetic damages. Secondly, as the sun goes up and comes down, it can cause temperature fluctuations which can lead to condensation. This condensation can lead to moisture and rust forming on your motorcycle's body and interior. Keep your motorcycle in a dark corner and away from areas that tend to get wet.

Wash Your Motorcycle

Washing your motorcycle before storing it is imperative. After your last ride, your motorcycle may have some moisture and grime lingering on it. If this isn't washed away before storage, it can lead to rust and corrosion. Be sure to wash your motorcycle to remove all of this grime and then dry it thoroughly. Finish it off by applying a new coat of wax that will act as a shield against moisture during the winter.

Change Your Motor Oil

Your motorcycle's oil works all year long to keep your engine healthy, and it doesn't stop during winter storage. If old oil is left in your motorcycle while it is stored, this oil can break down in your engine. This can lead to sludge formation in your engine even though it's not in use. To prevent this damage from occurring, change your motorcycle's oil and oil filter before storing it. To find the best synthetic motorcycle oil, click here. Keep Your Tires off the Ground

Although your tires won't have to deal with winter roads, they will still need to be taken care of. If you don't own a motorcycle rack, we highly recommend that you invest in one. A rack will help you keep your motorcycle's tires off the ground, helping to prevent flat spots from forming. It will also help prevent moisture from seeping into your tires. If you can't get your hands on a motorcycle rack this winter, remember to rotate your tires every week or so to prevent them from getting damaged.

Charge Your Battery

As you put your motorcycle away, you may already be dreaming of warmer spring days when you will finally be able to cruise around on your bike. To make this dream a reality as soon as spring arrives, be sure you take proper care of your battery. Leaving it connected and not charging can lead to a dead battery come spring. For the best results, connect it to a tender that will keep it properly charged without overcharging it all through the winter.

Fuel Tank Tips

Although your motorcycle won't be in use this winter, it can still greatly benefit from a full tank of fuel. This is because a full tank leaves little room for moisture and condensation to form inside. Once you've filled up your tank, don't forget to use a fuel stabilizer. This can help prevent your fuel from breaking down over the winter and will have your gas ready for use in the spring.
