Easy Spring Maintenance Tips for Your Motorcycle

If you put your motorcycle in storage for the winter, chances are you can't wait to get it out and go for a ride as soon as the sun starts shining. While this can be exciting, try not to get ahead of yourself. You will first have to take care of some maintenance tasks to ensure it's ready to go. To get you started, check out these tips.

Maintain Your Cooling System

Before you hit the road with your bike, be sure your coolant is still in good enough shape to keep your engine healthy. The coolant helps to regulate temperatures, keeping your engine from getting too hot or even freezing in the winter. If you want to try changing your coolant yourself, this is doable, but you need to ensure you have the right tools, the correct coolant and are ready to remove some parts of your bike. Since the parts you need to reach can be located behind others, you need to feel comfortable messing with your bike. Watch plenty of videos and understand your motorcycle before diving in.

Get Your Tires Ready

Keeping your motorcycle on a stand all winter long will help reduce the chances of damage to your tires. You may not have to worry about flat spots or moisture damage, but you do have to check your tire pressure. Since the cold can cause your tires to lose air, you must check the pressure with a tire gauge before you go anywhere. The tire walls will tell you the recommended pressure, or you can check what your owner's manual says about this. If your tires are running low, head to the gas station to fill them up; just be sure you have your tire gauge with you. Once this is done, check the tread to ensure your tires are still safe for the road. If the wear bars are almost even with your tread, it's definitely time to get replacement tires.

Give Your Motorcycle an Oil Change

You want to be sure your motorcycle's oil is still in good enough shape to keep your engine protected before you head out on the road. If it's time to change the oil, don't go anywhere before this is done. Clean oil will help your engine perform at its best and prevent premature wear. If you want to try changing the oil yourself, follow the manufacturer's recommendations and use the right type of oil for your ride. While you're at it, be sure to also change the oil filter to get the best results.

Prepare the Chain

You may forget all about your motorcycle's chain, but this component should be part of your maintenance schedule. Before taking your bike for your first ride of the year, be sure the chain is clear of all debris. If there is dirt or mud stuck in it, use a soft bristle brush to remove it all. Once this is done, use chain lubricant to get the chain back to its best. Coat the chain with it and let it sit for a few minutes. Clean away the excess, and it'll be ready to ride.

Check the Battery

For your motorcycle to run strong, you will need the battery to work. Connecting it to a tender during the winter will ensure it's charged and ready to go at a moment's notice. However, if you just let it sit in the motorcycle all winter long, you may find it's dead. If you're lucky, charging it will revive it. When your battery is ready to be used, be sure to check and clean the terminals and coat them with dielectric grease to protect them from corrosion.
