During the winter, just getting your car off the driveway and onto the road can be a struggle because of the freezing temperatures. To help you overcome these struggles, use these tips.

Winter Hacks for Your Car

If you're hoping to leave your home quickly in the morning during the winter, you may be disappointed. Your car may have some trouble just getting started, so getting out quickly may not be realistic. However, there are plenty of hacks you can use to get your car better suited to take on the winter cold.

Take Care of Your Windshield

It's not uncommon for your windshield to present some issues during the winter. From freezing to fogging up, it may seem like there are an endless amount of issues to deal with when it comes to your windshield. If you head outside and notice that your windshield is frozen, you may be tempted to pour warm water over it to get the ice to melt. This can lead to worse issues, like your windshield cracking. Instead of using hot water, look for an old credit card or gift card you no longer need. Use this as an ice scraper to remove the ice that has accumulated on your windshield. If you don't have one handy, you can also run into your kitchen and look for a spatula. Use a plastic spatula and not a metal one since the metal can scratch your windshield. If your windshield gets foggy all winter long and you don't know how to make this stop, there are easy ways to fight the fog. The first one involves a bit of shaving cream. Because shaving cream is made of some of the same things commercial defoggers are made of, it can help you put a foggy windshield behind you. Simply grab your shaving cream and spread some over the inside of your windshield. Once you've covered the windshield, remove this layer of shaving cream and your windshield will be good to go. Finally, if you're tired of your windshield wipers getting frozen to your windshield, this is easy enough to prevent. Simply raise your windshield wipers and place socks over the areas with the blades. This will ensure they aren't stuck to your car in the morning.

Check on Your Tires

If you're worried your tires won't keep you safe during the winter, now is a good time to check on them. One of the most important parts to check on is the tire tread. Since this is what will ensure your car is able to grip the road no matter what the conditions are like, you'll want to ensure there is plenty of tread left on your tires. The easiest way to check on your tire tread involves a penny. Once you have a penny in your hand, head out to your car. Choose a tire and insert the penny headfirst in between the grooves. If the majority of Lincoln's head is covered by the tread, then your tires are still in good condition. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, then it's time for new tires. Keep Your Side Mirrors from Freezing

If you're backing out of your driveway and notice your side mirrors are frozen, then you'll have to wait until they thaw out before hitting the road. If you're in a hurry, this can be a real hassle. Luckily, there is a super easy way to prevent your side mirrors from freezing. Head into your home and look for two plastic bags. Grocery bags will work just fine and are probably the easiest to find. Once you've used your car for the last time that day, grab your two grocery bags and place them over the side mirrors. Tie these around the side mirrors and secure them tightly. Leave them there overnight and remove them in the morning before pulling out of your driveway. Your mirrors should be clear and ready to go.
