After a long summer of riding around on your motorcycle, now is a great time to give it a quick check-up. To get started, use these basic motorcycle maintenance tips.

Give Your Motorcycle an End of Summer Check-Up

As summer is nearing its end, now is a good time to give your motorcycle a quick check-up. To ensure it's still in good shape and ready for the fall, take some time to check its systems and fluids. To get started, use these simple maintenance tips.

Take a Look at Your Motorcycle's Tires

During the summer months, there's no question that the asphalt and roads you're riding on are hot. Since your tires are in constant contact with this heat, you'll want to check on them periodically to ensure they're not at their end. Take the time to examine your tire tread so that you're not riding around on seriously worn tires. If they are worn, you'll have reduced traction and your tires will struggle to grip the road, leaving you in potential danger. While you're checking on the tread, don't forget to also check on your tire pressure. Use a pressure to gauge to ensure your tires are at the proper pressure so that your maneuverability and safety aren't compromised.

Basic Chain Maintenance

Next up is checking on your motorcycle's chain. If your chain has quite a bit of dirt or debris stuck in it, grab some gentle brushes to remove this buildup. While you're checking on your chain, don't forget to also pay attention to its tension. Check your owner's manual to figure out what the ideal tension is for your specific motorcycle. If you've never adjusted this yourself, it's really not hard and you can definitely take care of it yourself. Finally, finish off your chain maintenance by lubricating it so that it's able to perform its job well.

Test Your Motorcycle's Brakes

Your motorcycle's brakes are super important for your safety and the safety of others on the road, so it's super important to take the time to check on these. To do this, start by taking a look at your bike's brake pads. This is easier if your motorcycle is slightly lifted, so use a kickstand if you have one. Locate the brake pads to get a look at how worn down they are. Most will have an indicator groove that makes it easier to detect when your brake pads are severely worn. Don't wait until this groove is completely gone since, by this time, your brakes won't be working at their best. Changing the brake pads isn't super hard, but you may want the help of a professional to get it done. Check on Your Motorcycle's Fluids

Speaking of your brakes, don't forget to also check on your brake fluid along with the rest of the fluids your motorcycle relies on to keep it going. These include your motor oil, coolant, and fuel. If any of these are running low, top them off using the same type already in your motorcycle. You will also need to check on the condition on each and decide if it's time to flush any of them and replace them with brand new fluids.

Carefully Wash Your Motorcycle

Giving your motorcycle a thorough wash will help you catch any other issues it may have. Grab some buckets, water, gently sponges, and your cleaning fluid of choice and get down to it. Gently scrub off all of the dirt and debris on your motorcycle's body. Be careful not to get water into any areas that can cause damage. Once you've carefully rinsed off your motorcycle, dry it off with a drying chamois so that it doesn't develop any watermarks on its body. Finish it off with a protective layer of wax.

Give It a Final Walkaround

Now that your motorcycle is fully clean, walk around it and check on all of its parts. Make sure the different nuts and bolts on its body are nice and tight. Look out for fluid drops around your motorcycle since these can indicate you have a leak somewhere. If your tires have spokes, check on these to ensure they're all tight and secure. Once you're done giving it a final walkaround, your motorcycle should be good to go for another season on the road.
