The amount of dashboard lights that could potentially light up while you're on the road can get quite stressful. To help you understand some of the basics, check out this post.

Get to Know Your Dashboard Lights

The more features your car has, the more dashboard lights you'll have to memorize. While this may seem near impossible, there's really not much to it. To help you get to know some of the most basic dashboard lights and what they mean, check out this post from Syntex Lubricants.

Color and Urgency

As soon as you notice a new light turn on in you dashboard you may start to get stressed out. Before that happens, keep in mind that not all of your dashboard lights are trying to tell there is a serious problem under your hood. An easy way to know when it's an emergency and when it's not is by getting to know the different colors you will come across. To start, when you activate a feature like your high beams, a light will turn on in your dashboard to let you know these are on. These types of lights will appear in a color that won't alarm you, like blue or green depending on your car. A yellow or amber light is letting you know there's an issue but it's not super urgent. Finally, a red light means trouble, so you'll need to pull over safely as soon as you can. Oftentimes, a red dashboard light will mean that your car isn't safe to drive in its current condition, so don't push it.

Check Engine Light

You may have noticed that quite a lot of people will drive around with their check engine light on as if this were normal. While this light may not be on because your car is in serious danger, it's still important that you get it diagnosed. Since this light can turn on for a number of reasons, you may not know right away why it has turned on. You'll need to take your car into the shop to get it diagnosed using a professional scan tool. Oftentimes, your car will just need some maintenance performed on it to get this light to turn off.

Coolant Temperature Light

One light that does mean serious trouble is your coolant temperature light. This light will illuminate when temperatures under the hood are exceeding their normal range. In other words, your engine is overheating. You likely already know that this can lead to serious damage in your engine and very expensive repairs. Before things have a chance to escalate this much, pull over safely and turn off your engine. Let things cool down completely before touching anything under the hood.

Oil Pressure Light

Your oil pressure light is another one you should never ignore. This light is trying to warn you that there is a problem with your motor oil, whether it's running low or isn't able to do its job properly. If you continue to drive while this light is on, your engine may seize leaving you in a worse situation. Pull over as soon as you can and let things under the hood cool down before checking on your oil. If your oil pressure light has turned on, your car may benefit from an oil change. This time, be sure to make it a synthetic oil change in Kyle. A quality oil like AMSOIL Oil's Signature Series 0W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil can keep your engine protected for longer. Battery Alert Light

Never ignore your battery alert light since this light is likely trying to tell you that your battery is running low. Ignoring it can cause you to get stranded in the middle of the road, which isn't ideal on any road. Pull over to a safe place and get your car towed to a mechanic to get your battery checked and your battery terminals checked out.

Airbag Fault Light

Your airbag light may not seem like a big deal and its yellow color may make it easy to ignore, but don't ignore it for too long. When this lights turns on it's because your airbags may not deploy as expected. This means that if you get into a car accident, your airbags may not deploy at all, leaving you in more danger. In other cases, your airbags may deploy when you least expect it. This can cause a sudden shock while you're driving and may even lead to injuries, so get your airbags checked out when this light turns on.
